MALAY, Aklan – The Sangguniang Bayan here opposed the conversion of Boracay Island’s roads into a national road.

Town councilor Dante Pagsuguiron said they decided to oppose the DPWH proposal since the agency already implemented a 12-meter road setback when the island was closed for rehabilitation.

During the rehabilitation, hundreds of commercial establishments and structures were demolished due to massive clearing and road-widening activities.

Engr. Fritz Ruiz, chief of the planning and design section of Aklan district engineering office, said on Oct. 3 the support of the Sangguniang Bayan is a requirement for the conversion of municipal roads into a national road.

“Kailangan may budget yearly para ma-maintain ang Boracay road. Kung kaya naman ng probinsiya, they have to allot a budget for the maintenance of roads in Boracay,” Ruiz added.

Road sections converted into national road will be included in the regular infrastructure program of the national government.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Thursday proposed to the legislative council the conversion of existing Boracay circumferential road and alternate road network in barangays Manoc-Manoc, Balabag and Yapak.

The proposal covered road sections from Cagban port (Manoc-Manoc) to Puka Beach, Bloomfields to Crossing Rotunda, Crossing Rotunda to Tambisaan port to Cagban port, Bulabog to Mount Luho, and Bulabog to Ati Village.(With Akean Forum/PN)
