BORACAY – Malay, Aklan acting mayor Frolibar Bautista vowed not to tolerate illegal tour guides and profiteers taking advantage of the gradual return of tourists to this island.

A group of local tour guides has been calling on the local government to take action against individuals who take on freelance jobs in Boracay without the necessary training to be tour guides and “commissioners”.

They said these individuals take advantage of tourists by overpricing tours and activities and are openly peddling their services on the beachfront.

“Their illegal activities destroy Boracay’s tourism image. They are threatening the tourism sector,” said Bautista.

A municipal ordinance requires all tourist guides, coordinators and escorts to be registered and to display their identification cards at all times while conducting their trade.

They must also observe proper grooming, utmost politeness, courtesy and hospitality in assisting visitors or tourists.

“Itong mga pasaway ang sumisira sa turismo sa Boracay. Sa mga ganitong mga tao, itigil na ninyo ang mga ilegal na aktibidad,” said Bautista.

Also strictly prohibited to assist visitors are those individuals who are under the influence of liquor and are promoting prostitution and illegal drugs./PN
