Marañon Cup 1st, 6th district elims set

BACOLOD City — District eliminations for the 5th Negros First Gov. Alfredo G. Marañon Jr. Cup boxing tournament in the 1st and 6th districts have been set.

Candoni town will host the 6th District elimination on August 9 to 10, while San Carlos City will host the 1st District’s on August 29, 30, and 31.

Other districts have yet to submit their elimination schedules to the Provincial Sports Development Office.

The championship will be held on October 8 to 12 at the Bacolod Arts and Youth Sports Center as part of the MassKara Festival.

The 6th District comprises Cauayan, Hinobaan, Ilog, Kabankalan City, and Sipalay City. It placed sixth in last year’s Cup.

Boxers from the 1st District — Escalante City, Toboso, Calatrava, San Carlos City, and Salvador Benedicto — topped last year’s Cup held in La Carlota City.

Angel “Nonong” Verdeflor, provincial sports coordinator and president of the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines, Inc. – Western Visayas chapter, will supervise the tournament.

Hundreds of boxers from across the province will vie for titles in different weight categories, Verdeflor said.

Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao is expected to be the guest of honor during the championship of the tournament organized by the Office of the Governor./PN
