BACOLOD City – Cases of measles in the city saw a three-fold increase in the first quarter of this year.
Data from the City Health Office (CHO) showed that from January 1 to March 22, a total of 10 cases with zero fatality were recorded. This is 233.3 percent higher than the three cases and zero death logged in the same period last year.
Barangay Taculing recorded the highest number of measles cases at three. The rest of the cases were listed in barangays Granada, Handumanan, Mandalagan, Mansilingan, Tangub, Villamonte, and Vista Alegre.
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that primarily affects the respiratory tract and spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms often include a fever of 40°C or higher, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a characteristic rash.
German measles, meanwhile, is a milder infection. The disease is preventable through the measles-rubella (MR) vaccine.
The CHO advised the public anew to seek early medical treatment when symptoms occur./PN
