BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Lionel Messi reminded the football world of his enduring brilliance, scoring twice to steer Argentina to a commanding 3-0 win over Venezuela in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Thursday night (Friday in the Philippines).

In what could be his final home qualifying appearance, the Inter Miami CF star delivered a vintage performance before a packed and emotional Estadio Monumental crowd. His brace, combined with Lautaro Martínez’s header, sealed Argentina’s latest triumph as the defending world champions extended their unbeaten run in South American qualifiers.

Messi broke the deadlock in the 39th minute after receiving a pass from Julián Álvarez, lofting the ball over the Venezuelan keeper and defenders to put Argentina ahead at halftime.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 65th minute when Messi initiated a set piece that found Nicolás González on the wing. González’s cross connected with Martínez, who headed in their second goal.

Messi capped the victory in the dying minutes, finishing off a Thiago Almada assist to notch his second strike of the evening and Argentina’s third.

Argentina dominated possession and created multiple chances, including an early attempt from Álvarez and a disallowed goal by Cristian Romero for offside.

The win keeps Lionel Scaloni’s side on course in the CONMEBOL qualifying table as they prepare for Tuesday’s away clash with Ecuador. Venezuela, meanwhile, will look to stay in contention when it hosts Colombia on the same day./PN
