ILOILO – A tragic accident claimed the life of a mother in Barangay Quipot, Janiuay town on Tuesday morning, July 1, after she was accidentally shot by her own son.
The victim was identified as Lucy Maris. She sustained a fatal gunshot wound after a shotgun —allegedly owned by her son Reynold — accidentally discharged.
According to Police Captain Hector Ayagan, chief of the Janiuay Municipal Police Station, the firearm went off unexpectedly while Reynold was cleaning it inside their home.
“It appears the trigger was unintentionally pulled while the firearm was being handled, causing it to fire,” said Ayagan. “Unfortunately, the mother was in the adjacent part of the house when she was hit.”
Reynold rushed his mother to the Janiuay District Hospital but she was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
The younger Maris is currently in the custody of the Janiuay MPS while police await guidance from the victim’s family on whether they intend to press charges.
Authorities were also reviewing the circumstances surrounding firearm possession and safety in the household./PN
