NAST holds dialogue with researchers, students in Antique

SAN JOSE, Antique – The National Academy of Science and Technology-Philippines (NAST-Philippines) recently conducted a dialogue with teachers, students and local officials at the University of Antique (UA) in Sibalom.

Academician Rhodora Azanza, President of NAST-Philippines and member of the Biological Sciences division led the team of six academicians and national scientists during its lecture series.

The activity aimed to promote science and technology and “to bring in scientists closer to the grassroots,” inspire and encourage researchers and other professionals to conduct more research and adapt science and technology for development.

Director Luningning Samarita-Domingo emphasized the four important functions of NAST-Philippines such as recognition function as mandated under Presidential Decree 1003-A, wherein the Academy continues to give awards to Filipino scientists and scientific and technological endeavors aimed at advancing the Philippine State of Science and Technology.

Stated in Executive Order 818, NAST under its functions, advises the president and Cabinet secretaries on matters related to science and technology.

NAST also builds linkage with international groups/conglomerates and under Republic Act 9107, mandated to manage and operate the Philippine Science Heritage Center, the country’s main repository of the contributions, achievements and accomplishments of Filipino scientists in the field.

National Scientist Lourdez Cruz, member of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences division, talked on the topic “Sustainable Consumption and Our Future.”

Former Department of Environment and Natural Resources secretary and national scientist Angel Alcala shared the success story of the “Apo Island Local Community: From Rags to Riches.”

Other relevant topics discussed by academicians included Reconnecting Agriculture with Nutrition, Health and Environment by Eufemio Rasco Jr. and Social Safeguards for Sustainable Development by Aura Matias.

Rhodora Azanza discussed Fish Kills and Toxic Algal Blooms in the Philippines while Christopher Bernido shared about Physics from Planck Scale to Billion Plus Lightyears.

Former senator Loren Legarda conveyed her support to the event and lauded the initiatives of NAST for sharing their programs to educate the Antiqueños.

UA President Pablo Crespo Jr. appreciated the undertakings of NAST-Philippines for sharing their researches and success stories to help students, researchers and other stakeholders better understand the importance of science and technology.(With a report from PILAR MABAQUIAO/PN)
