BACOLOD City – The municipality of Hinigaran in Negros Occidental is showcasing its best homegrown products in the newly opened One Town, One Product (OTOP) store, the first local government unit or LGU-led hub in the province.

Launched in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on September 1, the OTOP hub also houses the Negosyo Center and a training center for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the southern Negros town.

DTI-Negros Occidental Director Lynna Joy Cardinal, in an interview on Tuesday, said that the establishment of OTOP stores is a core part of the commitment of the government to boost local livelihoods and build a stronger and more resilient economy.

“This project is a promise for MSMEs that their hard work and creativity will be seen, celebrated, and rewarded,” she added.

The Hinigaran OTOP hub sells products, such as furniture and furnishings made of lampirong (windowpane oyster) shells, which are abundant in the area, as well as fashion accessories and food products.

Vice Mayor Nadie Arceo said the municipal government is committed to continuing to support enterprise development through various programs being implemented for the MSMEs.

When he was mayor, Arceo issued an executive order supporting and institutionalizing OTOP in the municipality in compliance with Republic Act 11960, or the OTOP Philippines Act.

OTOP Philippines is a government flagship program that supports MSMEs through tailored government interventions to promote inclusive local economic growth.

Section 7 provides that products must be consistent with culture, community resources, connection with locals, creativity, and competitive advantage.

The cities of Kabankalan and Sipalay will also launch their OTOP stores on Sept. 11 and 12, respectively.

In Bacolod City, there are two OTOP hubs owned and managed by groups of local producers – the Association of Negros Producers Showroom on South Capitol Road and the OTOP Lifestyle inside Ayala Malls Capitol Central. (PNA)
