
BACOLOD City – The Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO) formed a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) Silay to probe the fatal shooting incident in Barangay Mambulac, Silay City on election day, May 12.
The shooting left two people dead and seven others injured. The victims were reportedly supporters of Silay City’s Mayor Joedith Gallego, who was seeking reelection for a second term.
NOCPPO director Colonel Rainerio De Chavez promptly organized SITG Silay to lead the investigation and expedite justice for the victims.
According to NOCPPO, the task group is designed to coordinate all investigative efforts, ensuring a swift and thorough resolution to the case. It represents a strong commitment to resolving this case efficiently and effectively.
The task group will oversee key aspects of the investigation, including the collection of witness statements and affidavits, identification of suspects, and filing of appropriate charges.
Meanwhile, Arnie Benedicto, the village chief of Barangay Lantad, Silay City, who has been identified as the primary suspect, surrendered on Monday afternoon.
NOCPPO hailed the surrender as an early victory in the still-developing case.
However, the investigation was still ongoing as of press time as authorities continued efforts to identify and apprehend any possible accomplices.
De Chavez further assured the public of a fair and impartial investigation, emphasizing NOCPPO’s commitment to ensuring that justice is served and that all those responsible will be held fully accountable under the law./PN
