MANILA – National University Bulldogs completed their five-peat quest with a 25-16, 28-26, 25-23 sweep of Far Eastern University Tamaraws in a do-or-die Game 3 of the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball tournament finals at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Negrense Leo Ordiales led the way with 13 points, built on 10 attacks and three blocks, while Rwenzmel Taguibolos stepped up with 10 markers, including five blocks, for the Bulldogs, who wrapped up the best-of-three series at 2-1.
Michaelo Buddin tallied nine points and 11 excellent receptions, while Leo Aringo contributed nine points and 10 excellent receptions for the Bulldogs, who captured their fifth straight championship.
“I think our maturity on the court came out more. Our experience really showed,” Buddin said in a post-game interview. “We also took advantage of our defense, which we were able to convert into points.”
After a lopsided first set victory, the Bulldogs were engaged in a tight battle in the second set where they trail 25-26 before Jade Disquitado converted three straight points to secure a 2-0 set edge.
The Bulldogs played catch up anew in the third set as they trail 19-21 before Taguibolos tied the score with his blocking and later secured the championship with connections from Buddin and Aringo.
“Well, I think it’s their trust in us. Their trust that every time, whoever the player we bring in or choose they will contribute,” Bulldogs head coach Dante Alinsunurin said after the win.
“The players know that the coaches repay that trust of them to us. That’s what I see, and that’s why our NU volleyball program continues to rise,” he added.
Dryx Saavedra was the lone double-digit scorer for the Tamaraws with 24 points, from 21 attacks and three blocks./PN
