One of thousands

PROBABLY a few thousand couples have gotten engaged today but only one pair will hit the front page of most papers. All people are equal in law, society, but not always in print.

One is a singer, one is a sportsperson and both have been quite successful in their pursuits. What of the other 999+ couples that made the same commitment?

Everyone should be congratulated, praised and welcomed to the next step in their lives but if they only have a page each it will still be a very big edition. A number of paper deliverers might end up with muscle damage.

Rather than concentrating on what makes people different we should look for similarities and maybe there would be less arguments and then less wars. It’s just a hope.

Anyway, best of wishes to all of the couples, not just one pair.

Clothes do not make the person

One man wears a suit to a meeting, thousands die in a war. Which gets more coverage?

President Volodymyr Zelensky is trying to keep his citizens alive and that is his only real objective at the moment.

Would the Donald Trump posse yell at the Pope if he turns up in his usual white ‘dress’? It’s time to solve the world’s problems, none of which seem to be the result of a ‘wardrobe accident’’

Credibility shortage

Recently Ghislaine Maxwell has supported Trump say that he was “was never inappropriate with anybody”, and that the Prince Andrew photo was fake.

Case solved, all okay, except perhaps that the defense has come from a convicted sex offender including as a child sex trafficker.

Given her history it is probably best to completely ignore her and her vain attempt to get a pardon from the United States President.

Read about freedom before it is extinct.

Like many outsiders I am fascinated by US politics but don’t fully understand it, so I decided to read a few books, specifically “Fear: Trump in the White House” by Bob Woodward and “The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir” by John Bolton. I expected a range of opinions but found similar outlooks.

Both books described the workings of the Trump Presidency although not in a flattering way. So far there hasn’t been a successful attempt to sue either author, although Trump has tried.

Given that the President doesn’t seem to appreciate any criticism, the raid on John Bolton’s house and office by the Trump Department of Justice could be seen as an act of retaliation for his book although so far the situation is unclear.

If you don’t want to be criticized for your work performance, then do the job properly, fairly and without bias or favor.

Both books are excellent reads.

Coloring in between the lines

President Trump has suggested painting his border wall black so that it will be harder to climb. This is amazing, not the fact that he is going to paint 1127 km (700 miles) of wall black, but that he is going to use actual science to achieve something.

Actually, he’s not going to paint it himself but some minimum wage person probably, unless they are already on the other side of the border after ICE had gotten them.

It is only necessary to paint the Mexican side as surely nobody would be escaping from his great country, so that side can stay white or grey but he will probably want it to look “big” and “beautiful”.

Is this just another silly distraction or will it happen? It sounds like something from Alice in Wonderland but unfortunately Alice has already been deported. (dennis.fitzgerald.letters@gmail.com)/PN
