MANILA – Former Sen. Sergio Osmeña said on Monday that there is a “mishandling” in President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte’s foreign policy.
“Lahat na ginagawa ng diplomats natin, kumakamot sila sa ulo eh. Normally, if there is going to be a major change, nawa-warn na (those) on the ground pero dito, biglang (iba ang) lumalabas sa bibig niya,” Osmeña said.
The ex-solon was reacting over Duterte’s remarks declaring cutting the country’s military and economic ties with its long-standing ally, the United States.
But several days after, the President, known for his tough-talk, clarified that his statement did not mean severance of ties as it would affect the PH-US diplomatic relations.
“When you say severance of ties, you cut diplomatic relations. I cannot do that… What I mean was a separation of foreign policy. In the past we always follow what the US will give the cue,” the chief executive explained.
Osmeña said the way Duterte handles issues on foreign policy “does not make us look good.”
While he believes the former Davao City mayor has good intentions, Osmeña said the country cannot afford to make powerful enemies.
“I think President Duterte means well… He’s got a stream of thought and his people are trying to cover up,” he concluded./PN
