Over 8,000 Western Visayans reel from ‘habagat’, successive typhoons

ILOILO – Successive typhoons coupled with the southwest monsoon have displaced thousands across Western Visayas, with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reporting nearly 9,000 individuals affected as of September 26.

From September 18 to 26, data showed that 8,956 residents from Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo bore the brunt of torrential rains and flooding triggered by typhoons Mirasol, Nando, and Opong, which enhanced the habagat or southwest monsoon.

At least 861 individuals are currently staying in 36 evacuation centers — 21 in Aklan, 93 in Capiz, and 747 in Iloilo.

Another 1,705 displaced residents sought refuge with relatives and friends, including 1,486 in Iloilo alone.

“Most of those impacted are residents who faced severe rainfall brought about by the habagat, further exacerbated by the impacts of typhoons Mirasol and Nando,” the DSWD said in its situation report on Friday.

The agency added that vulnerable communities still reeling from past calamities are now forced to contend with fresh devastation.

To date, P116.9 million worth of relief resources, including family food packs and financial assistance, have been readied for distribution.

“In light of the ongoing weather disturbances, DSWD encourages affected families to remain vigilant and report their needs to local authorities,” the agency stressed, assuring that aid will continue to flow to evacuation centers and communities hardest hit.

Local government units were likewise urged to strengthen coordination and extend emergency support as rains continue to lash the region./PN
