ILOILO City – In an exciting PRISAA elementary football championship held on January 20 at the Iloilo City Sports Complex, PAREF Westbridge emerged victorious against the formidable Central Philippine University (CPU) with a well-deserved 3-1 win.
Also the 2024 champion, PAREF Westbridge’s win this year brings them to the Integrated Meet, where they will fight for the chance to represent the province in the regional games.
Westbridge displayed their will to win early on, with Liam Aguadera netting the first goal within the first 10 minutes of play. However, CPU’s determined attitude resulted in an equalizer shortly after the first-half water break, resulting in a 1-1 tie at halftime.
The second half showed Westbridge’s resilience. Reyes scored the team’s second goal, breaking the tie, and John Raymund Ardiente sealed the win with a free-kick, making the final score 3-1.
Speaking about the team’s performance, Coach Wesley Hortelano shared what brought the team success.
“The team won because of the boys’ individual talent, their good teamwork, and a well-thought-out game plan,” he explained. “But above all, it was their ‘never give up’ mindset and their will-to-win attitude that brought us the championship.”
When then asked about the challenges the team faced in their journey, Coach Hortelano mentioned the limited time due to the holiday break.
“We had a short time to prepare because of the Christmas break,” he admitted. “It was a challenge to get the boys back into competitive form, but their dedication and hard work pulled them through.”
Reflecting on what it meant to win back-to-back championships, Coach Hortelano emphasized the gratitude of the team.
“We always put in mind that our football skills and talents are gifts from God, and we give Him back the glory,” he said. “The same passion, relentless optimism, and desire to win are what made this possible. Everyone played a part—the boys, the coaches, the parents, the faculty, and the entire Westbridge family. This is a victory we share together.”
With their victory, PAREF Westbridge is now preparing for the Integrated Meet, where they aim to continue their winning streak and represent Iloilo City at the Regional PRISAA games.
