MANILA – The month of August is Philippine Basketball Association’s (PBA) deadline to determine whether its 2020 season will push through even just with the Philippine Cup or all conferences will be cancelled for good.
PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said that the league’s fate will depend on the situation of the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak in the country.
“Magdidesisyon ulit kami kung one conference or cancel na ang season by August,” said Marcial after a video conference with the PBA Board on May 2.
According to Marcial, a two-conference format is unlikely taking place this season after the government extended the enhanced community quarantine in Metro Manila anew until mid-May.
He added that even if Metro Manila is to be downgraded to general community quarantine by May 16, holding sports events such as basketball leagues is still prohibited.
Marcial suspended all PBA activities since March in accordance with the national government’s orders to stay at home and avoid holding of mass gatherings.
The only 2020 PBA match fans were able to see was between defending champions San Miguel Beermen and Magnolia Hotshots. It was a victory for the Beermen, 94-78./PN
