MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings’ center Gregory Slaughter broke his silence in light to several speculations following his recent announcement to take a break from the basketball world.
In a Twitter post on Feb. 13, the Filipino-American big man denied claims that he is demanding for a higher salary from the Ginebra management and admitted that he was clueless in his involvement in trade negotiations.
“There have been a lot of inaccurate theories going around about my recent decision,” he said. “First, I never received any contract offer. It’s unfair to say I made demands when there was no offer and, second, I was never aware of any trade.”
Several reports have surfaced since he made his announcement a week ago that includes a higher salary and a ‘no-trade’ clause on his contract.
Another report claims that the former Ateneo Blue Eagles center is considering to hang his jersey for good if he is to be traded away from the kings – only team that he has played for in his six-year professional career.
The 31-year-old Slaughter shocked the basketball world after he pulled an announcement on his social media account last week that he plans to take a leave from basketball and will not renew his contract with the Kings.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, he was selected first overall by the Kings during the 2013 PBA Rookie Draft. He went on to win four PBA championships with Ginebra, including the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup last month./PN
