PBBM has already chosen the next PNP chief – DILG

MANILA – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has already selected a new Philippine National Police (PNP) chief to replace the soon-to-retire Police General Rommel Marbil.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary Jonvic Remulla stated on Monday that it is the Chief Executive himself who will announce the new PNP head.

“Meron na siyang napili. Excellent, very qualified, very dynamic, good track record,” Remulla said in an ambush interview on Monday.

Remulla added that it would be an advantage if the next PNP chief will have a longer term to enforce a continuing vision for the police organization.

“Ang nangyayari kasi sa atin, a tenure of a chief PNP will only last one year, a little more than one year. Kailangan natin merong continuing vision na may buy-in ng lahat ng PNP as the years go by,” he said.

“Ngayon kasi paiba-iba. Every year iba ang directive, vision, mission statement. My goal is that isa na lang. No matter who the Chief PNP is,” he added.

President Marcos extended the term of Marbil by four months beyond the cop’s compulsory retirement age of 56 in February. The extended term is set to expire on June 7.

Among those qualified to head the PNP are Lieutenant General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., Lieutenant General Robert Rodriguez, Lieutenant General Edgar Alan Okubo, the chief of the directorial staff of the PNP; Police Major General Nicolas Torre III; and Police Major General Anthony Aberin./PN
