PCAP: Iloilo stays on top, Negros splits

MANILA – Iloilo Kisela Knights continued its fine play in the 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) All-Filipino Conference by sweeping its two games on Wednesday night.

It opened the evening with a 14-7 victory over Rizal before following it up with a 13.5-7.5 triumph over Quezon to stay on top in Southern Division with 18-1 slate.

The Kisela Knights edged Rizal in blitz game, 5-2, behind victories by Karl Victor Ochoa (Board 2), Cherry Ann Mejia (Board 3), Rogelio Antonio Jr. (Board 4), Rolly Parondo Jr. (Board 6), and Cesar Mariano (Board 7).

The Kisela Knights also defeated Rizal in rapid event, 9-6, with triumphs by Ochoa, Mejia, Antonio and Fritz Bryan Porras (Board 5) and a draw from Mariano.

Against Quezon, the Kisela Knights barely won the blitz game, 4.5-2.5, with victories from Ochoa, Mejia, Antonio and Parondo and a draw from Mariano.

The Kisela Knights also had a close 9-5 triumph against Quezon in rapid event with two-pointers from Horizon Villanueva (Board 1), Mejia, Antonio and Mariano and a draw from Ochoa.

“The team was taking it one game at a time. We also made sure that each player will have their chance to play and shine at any given match,” said Iloilo head coach Hubert Canto.

Negros Kingsmen, meanwhile, scored a 15.5-5.5 domination over Caloocan before losing to San Juan, 14-7, in the second game. Negros currently has 12-7 standings.

The Kingsmen was forced to a 3.5-3.5 deadlock by Caloocan in the blitz game with David Elorta (Board 1), Mari Turqueza (Board 2) and Adrian Pacis (Board 4) scoring wins and Ellan Asuela (Board 5) settling for draw.

Negros was close to perfect against Caloocan in blitz game, 12-2, behind wins by Elorta, Turqueza, Pacis, Asuela and Edsel Montoya (Board 6) and draws by Adelaide Joie Lim (Board 3) and Ted Montoyo (Board 7)./PN
