CAPIZ – In a strong display of military cooperation, the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry (Spearhead) Division (3ID) and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) officially launched the Philippines–Australia Army-to-Army Exercise (PAAAE) “KASANGGA: 2025-02” on Wednesday, October 8, at Camp Peralta in Jamindan, Capiz.

The event was graced by Major General Efren F. Morados, vice commander of the Philippine Army, who highlighted the importance of the joint exercise in enhancing the operational readiness and partnership of both nations.

Also in attendance were Brigadier General Joey A. Escanillas, assistant division commander of the 3ID; Captain (RAN) Emma McDonald-Kerr, Australian Defense Attaché; and several other high-ranking officers and personnel from both the Philippine and Australian military forces.

Over the course of 31 days, hundreds of soldiers from the 3ID and ADF will participate in a series of joint exercises and training activities designed to strengthen interoperability, refine tactical capabilities, and foster camaraderie between the two armies.

The KASANGGA 2025-02 exercise aims to enhance combined operational capabilities through synchronized operations, modern training methodologies, and collaborative missions. Training activities include the use of modern technologies such as drones, maritime assets, and advanced defense weaponry. The exercise will also focus on teamwork, medical response, and mission planning under a unified command structure to ensure both forces can effectively operate together in real-world situations.

This year’s KASANGGA exercise marks the second iteration of the PAAAE in 2025. The first was held in Mindanao and officially opened on May 19 at Camp Evangelista in Patag, Cagayan de Oro City.

In his keynote address, Morados emphasized the exercise as a testament to the enduring commitment of both nations to regional peace, mutual defense, and professional excellence.

“These exercises strengthen not just interoperability but also trust, understanding, and friendship between our soldiers,” he said. “Australia has long been a trusted partner of the Philippines, always ready to lend a helping hand in times of need.”

McDonald-Kerr echoed these sentiments, underscoring the importance of joint training initiatives in addressing emerging regional security challenges. She stressed that collaboration and shared understanding are key to effective response and crisis management.

Meanwhile, Escanillas lauded the partnership as a vital step toward realizing the Philippine Army’s vision of becoming a world-class, multi-mission-ready, and cross-domain-capable organization.

“Through exercises like these, we transform our organization — from being strong as individuals to becoming excellent as a collective; from being reactive to becoming proactive; from being national defenders to becoming regional partners,” he said.
