MANILA – Volleyball’s biggest stage is coming to the Philippines.
For the first time in history, the country will host the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in 2029, a landmark moment hailed as both a sporting triumph and a gift to Filipino fans.
The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and Volleyball World made the announcement during the final day of the Men’s World Championship 2025 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, led by FIVB president Fabio Azevedo and Brazilian volleyball legend Leila Barros.
The Philippines’ successful staging of the men’s tournament this year paved the way for the women’s edition. Azevedo said the nation’s organizational strength, hospitality, and passionate fans proved it is ready for the challenge.
“Hosting the Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2029 in the Philippines is an opportunity to again showcase not only the very best of volleyball but also the positive impact our sport has on society,” Azevedo said.
Volleyball World CEO Ugo Valensi added that the country offers “the perfect stage to inspire the next generation and connect communities,” citing the success of the men’s competition.
Asian Volleyball Confederation president and FIVB executive vice president Ramon Suzara echoed confidence that the Philippines will deliver a “spectacular Championship,” while Philippine Sports Commission chairman Patrick Gregorio described the hosting as a “great gift” to the Filipino volleyball community.
The 2029 edition will mark the second time the Women’s World Championship is staged in Southeast Asia, after Thailand’s hosting of this year’s event.
It will also follow the United States and Canada’s co-hosting of the 2027 edition and Qatar’s hosting of the Men’s Championship in 2029.
The FIVB World Championships are the sport’s premier events, gathering 32 teams for 64 matches across 17 days. Since 2023, the competitions have been held biennially./PN
