MANILA – More than 61,000 Filipinos marched in the streets on Sunday to denounce corruption and commemorate the 53rd anniversary of Martial Law, in what police officials described as “generally peaceful” nationwide protests despite sporadic unrest.

Acting Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said nearly 50,000 officers were deployed across the country, including almost 30,000 in Metro Manila, to secure the demonstrations.

“Our police units worked hard to keep everyone safe today. While there were some isolated incidents, including a trailer truck set on fire at the foot of the Ayala bridge by a few unruly protesters, most rallies went on peacefully because many participants cooperated with the authorities,” Nartatez said.

Official figures showed that of the 61,605 demonstrators counted by early evening, about 33,700 gathered in the capital while thousands more mobilized in other regions.

Authorities, however, confirmed pockets of disorder, such as stone-throwing and the torching of a truck near Ayala Bridge.

Despite these flare-ups, police commanders emphasized that restraint was exercised to ensure the majority of peaceful gatherings could proceed.

“We thank the organizers and participants who cooperated and followed the rules,” said Police Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño, the PNP spokesperson. “Our officers showed great courage today, and we truly appreciate their sacrifice and dedication in keeping everyone safe.”

The rallies, held simultaneously across the country, not only marked the dark anniversary of Martial Law but also amplified public outrage over alleged anomalies in flood control projects and other corruption scandals./PN
