Prepare for February power outages

ILOILO City – There will be power outages mostly on weekends this month, according to the  Iloilo Electric Cooperative (Ileco) I, Panay Electric Co. (PECO) and National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP).

Today, Feb. 8, and on Feb. 12 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., there will be power interruption to give way to the construction of Iloilo I’s double circuit 3-phase primary line (Capex Project).

The affected areas are the whole municipality of San Joaquin and 54 barangays of Miag-ao (Alimodias, Awang, Bacauan, Bacolod, Buenavista Norte, Buenavista Sur, Bugtong Lumangan, Cabangcalan, Cabunotan, Calagtangan, Cawayanan, Dalije, Damilisan, Diday, Fundacion, Guibuangan,  Igbugo, Igcabidio, Igcabito-on, Igcatambor, Igdalaquit, Igdulaca, Igpajo, Igpandan, Igpuro-Bariri, Igsoligue, Ilog-ilog, Lacadon, Lanutan, Lumangan, Mambatad, Maringyan, Naclub, Nam-o Norte, Nam-o Sur, Narat-an, Narorogan, Olango, Ongyod, Oyungan, Palaca, Potrido, Pudpud, Pungtod Naulid, Sag-on, San Fernando, San Rafael, Tabunacan, Ticdalan, Tig-Apog-Apog, Tigbagacay, Tiglawa, Tugura-ao, and Tumagbuc).

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. Power maybe restored earlier than or as scheduled, so please consider all lines and equipment energized at all times,” read part of Ileco I’s advisory.

On Feb. 9 for 12 hours from 6 a.m. to 6p.m. NGCP has scheduled interruptions affecting service areas of PECO (General Luna Street, Molo district, Barangay Bolilao and Barangay Tabuc Suba substations)  and Ileco I (Pavia substation).

NGCP will conduct preventive maintenance of its 100 MVA power transformer and associated HVEs including protection devices at its Iloilo substation.

The affected areas under Ileco I are the whole municipality of Leganes, portions of Pavia (barangays Aganan, Anilao, Cabugao Norte, Gumban Street, Gregori Street, Pagsanga-an, Poblacion, Tigum, Ungka I and II); and portions of Santa Barbara (barangays Cabugao Norte, Calaboa Este and Oeste, Conaynay, Lupa, Magancina, and Tuburan).

On the other hand, PECO in a separate advisory stated that since supply from Panay Energy Development Corp.’s (PEDC) coal plant will be unavailable due to preventive maintenance, it plans to run the Panay Power Corp. (PPC) diesel plant with a total net capacity of 50 megawatts for the period of the outage.

“We will utilize the embedded direct connection between PECO and PPC, Line 2 and Line 4, to facilitate the supply of power. We will likewise source supply from our PCPC contract and WESM (Wholesale Electricity Spot Market) thru Line 5 to further augment the supply needs of the city,” according to Marcelo Cacho, PECO administrative manager.

However, Cacho added, PECO may experience load-shedding if the consumption of the city exceeds the capacity of both the diesel plant and PCPC/WESM capacities.

“We will have to load-shed two of our feeder lines at a time with a combined capacity of 8 megawatts. As such, there is a possibility that our service area will experience rotational brownouts during the NGCP shutdown. Rest assured that we will be prioritizing residential areas and will request our larger customers to assist us by running their gensets to augment the power supply,” Cacho added.

Another brownout is scheduled on Feb. 15 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. due to the replacement of wood poles to steel poles by Ileco 1.

The affected areas will be the whole municipalities of Alimodian, Cabatuan, Leon, Maasin, Oton, San Miguel, Tigbauan, and Tubungan.

Also affected are the municipality of Santa Barbara (except barangays Cabugao Norte, Calaboa Este and Oeste, Conaynay, Lupa, Magancina, and Tuburan); the municipality of Pavia (except barangays Anilao, Cabugao Norte, Pagsanga-an, Tigum, and Ungka I and II); the municipality of Guimbal (except barangays Baras, Cabubugan, Calampitao, and Nalundan); and the municipality of Igbaras (except barangays Bagacayan, Buenavista, Calampitao, Lumangan, Lutungan, Santa Barbara, and Talayatay).

Activities involving the replacement of wood poles to steel poles by Ileco I will continue on Feb. 29 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Power interruption will be experienced in the whole municipalities of San Joaquin and Miag-ao, portions of Igbaras (barangays Buenavista, Calampitao, Lumangan, Lutungan, Santa Barbara, and Talayatay); and portions of Guimbal (barangays Baras, Cabubugan, Calampitao, Nalundan, and Santa Rosa)./PN
