PRO-6 wary of surge in rob cases due to lockdown

ILOILO City – The community quarantine being observed in various parts of Western Visayas could drive the economically displaced to break the law such as committing robbery, warned the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).

In this city alone, the quarantine period or lockdown is for nearly a month – from March 20 to April 14.

The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) assured the public it is ready to deal with lawless elements at this time of public health emergency due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

β€œSome unemployed people may be forced to rob others. Pero ang mga Ilonggos indi gid man amo sina ka desperado. Local government units and government agencies are supporting those adversely affected by the lockdown,” said Police Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong, PRO-6 spokesperson.

She acknowledged that the long quarantine period is leaving many people out of work and thus unable to support their families β€œbut we are hopeful the lockdown will end soonest.”

From March 16 to March 22 the PRO-6 recorded 350 crimes across the region – 43.64 percent lower than the 559 crimes reported in the same period last year.

Malong said if the lockdown is extended, more policemen would be patrolling the streets.

β€œWe are appealing to the public to be cooperative. Do not commit crimes. We are all affected by COVID-19. Let us be watchful ,” said Malong./PN
