PARIS Saint-Germain FC rallied back from two goals down to edge Tottenham Hotspur FC 4-3 on penalties and capture the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night (Thursday in the Philippines) at the Friuli Stadium in Udine, Italy.
Tottenham, now under new head coach Thomas Frank, appeared on course for the trophy after Micky van de Ven struck in the 39th minute and Cristian Romero doubled the advantage shortly after the break.
But the French champions, fresh from their European triumph last season, found late conversions from Lee Kang-in with five minutes remaining and from Goncalo Ramos deep into stoppage time, forcing a shootout.
The penalty contest began poorly for PSG when Vitinha missed their opening effort. But new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier denied Van de Ven, while Mathys Tel also failed to hit the target for Spurs. That set the stage for Nuno Mendes, who coolly slotted home the decisive kick.
Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pedro Porro converted for Tottenham, but PSG answered through Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, and Lee before Mendes sealed it.
The win marks the first Super Cup crown for PSG — and for any French side — adding to a haul that has already reached five trophies in 2025.
“I am proud. We have hadn’t much preparation but you could see that football is not only about the physical aspect — it is also about the mental aspect, being in the right place, having the right tactics,” PSG captain Marquinhos told Canal Plus.
“They sat back a lot after going 2-0 up and it is dangerous to invite PSG to come at you like that,” he added.
For Luis Enrique’s men, who had just a month’s rest following their FIFA Club World Cup final loss to Chelsea, the spirited comeback was the perfect way to begin another title chase./PN
