Work and play
EVERY Monday, the shrill alarm clock that pulls you out of your dream serves as a cruel reminder to that fact. For some people of my age, it mean it’s time for your eight hours (or more) of earning money. You skulk to the drab white walls of your office and watch the clock eagerly awaiting the time to go home.
It’s sad, this is something you do for majority of your life and it makes you stressed, pessimistic and cranky. However, maybe there’s a way to make going a little more enjoyable – by making your workplace fun.
There is so much to gain by adding a little color and laughter to the workplace. These are some pros I found on www.aim.ph in an article entitled “5 Benefits of Having a Fun Working Environment” by Vlad de Ramos. Contrary to popular belief, it actually helps in making employees more efficient. It makes them more productive and reduces employee burnout and absenteeism.
It can also build trust and improve communication among subordinates and supervisors. When you see each other’s strengths and weaknesses during recreational activities it builds a sense of understanding. Laughing and playing together makes us feel more human and make us comfortable around each other.
Having a fun work environment also gives employees drive to go to work. If they know they are going to a bright and fun office they will actually look forward to going to work. The Great Place to Work Institute had a survey asking people to rate their workplace factors and 81 percent who rated their companies “great” said they were working in a “fun” environment.
So it is possible to incorporate work and play together. Just because we are adults don’t we should be deprived of fun. Here is a little challenge for all of you out there; let your creative juices flow and find ways to make your office environment less like a concentration camp and more like a playground.
Maybe you could organize weekly games and team-building. You could have a recreation room or have an office pet. You could even take it out of the office and have regular parties and happy hours.
People are the lifeblood of companies and if you keep them happy by incorporating work and play, you’ll be sure to have better performance and profit. (angelica.panaynews@gmail.com/PN)
