ILOILO City – Alarmed by the rising number of motorcycle crashes across the city and province, Mayor Raisa Treñas has called on motorcyclists to drive responsibly and look out for one another, stressing the urgent need for safer roads.
“To all motorcyclists, please be careful while driving. Let’s take care of each other’s lives. Salamat,” the mayor said in a recent social media post, appealing directly to Iloilo’s growing motorcycle-riding community.
Her statement follows a string of deadly road accidents involving motorcycles and private vehicles in Iloilo City and nearby towns.
On March 25, 2025, a 57-year-old motorcycle rider died after his motorcycle collided with a car at the intersection of Iloilo Sunset Boulevard in Barangay Sooc, Arevalo district. Authorities believe that the victim’s helmet was dislodged during the impact, causing a fatal head injury.
Just this July 6, a deadly crash took place in Barangay San Antonio, Oton, Iloilo. A 21-year-old man driving a speeding car lost control and veered into the opposite lane, slamming into a modernized public utility jeepney.
The victim died on the spot, while 10 out of 13 passengers in the jeepney sustained mild to moderate injuries.
From January 1 to March 24 alone, the Iloilo Police Provincial Office recorded 1,082 road crashes across the province. These resulted in 42 deaths, 366 injuries, and damage to 674 vehicles. Police said most of the incidents involved motorcycles, with reckless driving cited as the leading cause.
Authorities continue to urge drivers to wear proper safety gear, follow speed limits, and observe traffic regulations as enforcement agencies step up their monitoring of high-risk areas./PN
