‘Quinta’ leaves P11-M agri damage in Antique

ANTIQUE – Typhoon “Quinta’ caused an estimated P11 million in agricultural damage in this province.

Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) head Broderick Train said northern Antique towns reported the biggest damage in agriculture, particularly in rice farms.

“Ang amon agriculture sector amo na medyo daku, mga P11 million siguro ang cost of damage sa palay lang ran. Ina ang report from northern, central and southern parts of Antique,” Train told Panay News.

He said the cost of damage is expected to increase. Eight towns have yet to submit reports regarding damages and losses brought by the weather disturbance.

Aside from the agriculture sector, Antique also recorded damage in infrastructures like bridges and roads.

Train said river control sections in some towns incurred damages due to flooding on Monday. The Provincial Engineering Office and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) are still estimating the cost of damage.

“Damo man sa infrastructure but wala pa kahatag ang aton DPWH and provincial engineers pero mostly sang damaged amo ang mga river control section,” Train added.

Meanwhile, PDRRMO recorded one fatality due to typhoon “Quinta.” Train said 44-year-old Noel Barsimo of Brgy. Esperanza 3, Sibalom, Antique was swept away by the strong water current of the creek. His body was found in the same creek on Monday.

PDRRMO also reported that a house in Tobias Fornier town was totally damaged while eight houses in Culasi and Patnongon were partially damaged due to flooding and strong winds.

An estimated 1,000 residents living near the rivers and coastal areas in the province were also evacuated on Monday.

As of this writing, Train said the PDRRMO is still gathering reports from other towns regarding the effects of the typhoon so as to launch a program to aid affected families and individuals./PN
