BACOLOD City – Councilor Ricardo Tan asked Mayor Evelio Leonardia to augment the daily food allowance of detainees at the Metro Bacolod District Jail.

Maintaining their health is important, especially that their cases are still being heard in local courts, Tan said.

“These prisoners are afforded certain rights by the law, including the right to health and humane conditions,” he stressed.

The jail is divided into two facilities: one in Barangay Taculing and another in Barangay Handumanan. It is being managed by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.

Currently, according to Tan, only P50 is allotted for the daily meal allowance of each prisoner.

This “meager” daily budget “is not enough to give them nutritious meals that will keep them healthy,” said the councilor.

Tan, chairman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod committee on police, security, jail management, and illegal drugs, plans to make the jail the first detention facility that is also a tourist destination in the country.

To do that, the jail must be “beautiful, clean, orderly, peaceful, and with complete facilities and amenities for the prisoners,” he said.

Tan plans to present his P200-million proposal to Leonardia and his fellow councilors, and tap national government agencies and the private sector to materialize it.

He said his plans will make the Metro Bacolod District Jail a tourism landmark./PN
