ILOILO City – All varieties of shellfish and Acetes sp., commonly known as alamang or hipon, from specific coasts in Western Visayas are still deemed unsafe for human consumption.

Recent samples collected from Panay, Pilar, President Roxas, Ivisan, Sapian, and Roxas City in Capiz; Mambuquiao and Camanci in Batan, Aklan; and Gigantes Island, Carles in Iloilo, have tested positive for paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) or toxic red tide.

In an effort to protect human health and minimize the negative impact on the shellfish industry, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Bulletin No. 22 dated Sept. 19 urged the public to refrain from consuming, gathering, harvesting, transporting, or selling any type of shellfish and Acetes sp. from the affected areas.

It’s important to note that fish, squid, shrimp, and crabs are safe for human consumption as long as – according to BFAR – they are fresh, thoroughly washed, and have had their internal organs, such as gills and intestines, removed before cooking.

PSP, according to the bureau, can lead to a range of neurological symptoms, including numbness, tingling, weakness, and paralysis. In severe cases, paralysis can affect respiratory muscles, leading to difficulty breathing and potentially fatal outcomes.

When these symptoms are experienced, treatments may include fluid therapy, detoxification, and supportive care, such as ventilatory support or artificial respiration, for severe cases.

Meanwhile, the following coasts remain free from red tide: Borongon, San Dionisio in Iloilo; and E.B. Magalona, Hinigaran, Talisay City, Silay City, Victorias City, and Bacolod City in Negros Occidental./PN
