ILOILO City – The crime volume in Western Visayas decreased by 7.27 percent in the first five months of the year compared to the same period last year, according to the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).
PRO-6 recorded 3,727 index crimes from January to May this year. In 2016, it recorded 4,019 crimes within the same months.
Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson, said index crimes were crimes against persons such as murder, homicide, physical injury and rape.
Crimes against property, on the other hand, were those such as robbery, theft, carnapping, and cattle rustling.
Aklan province had the highest index crimes at 1,125 cases or an increase of 20.45 percent from last year’s 934 cases (first five months).
Iloilo City’s index crimes, on the other hand, dropped by 29.01 percent – from 1,096 last year to 778 this year (January to May).
The province of Guimaras recorded 125 index crimes this year (January to May), a 19.35-percent drop from last year’s 155 cases.
Antique’s index crime this year posted a 18.56-percent drop – 237 cases from 2016’s 291 cases (January to May).
Capiz’s index crime decreased also, and by 3.68 percent – from 570 in 2016 to 549 this year.
Iloilo province’s index crimes were at 913 cases, a 2.80-percent drop from 973 cases in 2016 (January to May).
Meanwhile, crimes against property like theft decreased by 27.73 percent, from 1,655 last year to 1,196 this year (January to May). Robbery cases dropped, too, from 381 last year to 248 this year.
Gorero said the crime solution efficiency of the police in Western Visayas was at 58.24 percent (January to May) – higher than the 46.71 percent standard CSE required by the national police headquarters.
From January to May 2017 physical injury cases were recorded at 18.77 percent or 1,772 incidents. Last year for the same period, PRO-6 recorded 1,492 cases.
The province of Aklan posted the most number of physical injury cases at 504, followed by Iloilo with 368.
“The increase in physical injury cases in Aklan was mainly due to drunkenness particularly in Boracay Island,” said Gorero./PN
