CAPIZ – Classes in all levels, both public and private, in Roxas City, Capiz have been suspended from October 20 to 22, 2025, following widespread flooding caused by Tropical Storm “Ramil.”

Mayor Ronnie Dadivas announced the three-day class suspension after more than 30 schools in the city were inundated by floodwaters on Saturday, October 18.

The mayor said the decision was made to ensure the safety of students and school personnel, facilitate household rehabilitation, and allow time for psychosocial recovery for affected residents.

He explained that while major floodwaters in the city proper have subsided, some areas remain inaccessible due to road closures, landslides, and damaged infrastructure. The suspension, he said, ensures that no student or staff member is placed at risk during their commute.

Dadivas added that the break will also help families clean, rebuild, and rehabilitate their homes and belongings damaged by floodwaters. “Many of our constituents are still recovering from significant losses,” he said.

Furthermore, the mayor emphasized the importance of allowing students and their families time to recover emotionally from the distress caused by the flooding.

“We understand that the path to full recovery is long, but as one community, we will overcome this challenge together,” Dadivas said in a Facebook post. “Let us use this time to care for our families, check on our neighbors, and help our city heal. For further guidance and updates, please monitor the official channels of the City Government of Roxas.”

The Department of Education (DepEd) has encouraged teachers to use the suspension period to prepare for alternative learning delivery modes and focus on their own recovery, in accordance with DepEd’s disaster-response guidelines.

According to Maribeth Baldonado, information officer of the Schools Division Office (SDO) of Roxas City, floodwaters entered classrooms and soaked chairs, tables, books, and other learning materials.
