SAN JOSE, Antique – Students from public and private schools in the province tested their skills on emergency response during a two-day Junior Rescue Olympics at the Binirayan Hills here.
“This is the first Junior Rescue Olympics conducted by the municipality of San Jose de Buenavista through the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) and various stakeholders. And the event provided the venue for the youth to learn about disaster preparedness and response,” MDRRM officer Alex Crespo said.
Crespo added the activity will help younger generations acquire the needed skills and preparedness when actual unforeseen situations occur.
“It is in their generation now that they will experience climate change and should a disaster strikes, not only adults will be affected but children as well,” Crespo said.
The two-day event has three categories – the elementary, junior high school and senior high school.
The skills of the junior and senior high school students were tested in firefighting bucket relay, indoor accident extrication, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), bandaging, and splinting.
The elementary students, except for indoor accident extrication, also showed their abilities in CPR, firefighting bucket relay, bandaging, and splinting.(With a report from PIA-Antique/PN)
