ILOILO City – A couple was abducted at the parking area of a mall in Barangay San Rafael, Mandurriao district, and their sport utility vehicle stolen while the city was supposedly under tight security due to the ongoing meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The victims were call center agents – Marc Ymel Jocson, 22, of La Paz district and his 24-year-old girlfriend from Barangay Hibao-an, Mandurriao.

The abduction was carried out around 6:30 p.m. on Monday just a few blocks away from the Iloilo Convention Center, venue of the ASEAN meetings.

A former seafarer with a pending rape charge, the 22-year-old Sirius Jim Villareal, was arrested hours after in Barangay Puerto Princesa, Barotac Viejo, Iloilo.

His companion, 22-year-old security guard Reymund Cordero, was arrested, too.

A third suspect, Robert Tingson, was caught last night around 8 o’clock in Barangay Serallo, Anilao town.

Jocson and his girlfriend had just boarded a Ford Everest at the parking area of the mall when the three men threatened them with a gun and hauled them to the backseat, police said.

Villareal, a resident of Barangay 7, Tigbauan, Iloilo, was wanted for the alleged rape of two women in 2015.

Using duct tape, the suspects tied the woman’s hands and her boyfriend’s hands and feet. Both were blindfolded, too.

Just this Monday, the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) said it wanted to keep this city crime-free for the duration of the ASEAN meetings.

The goal was to avert “major crimes”, according to Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson.

Detained at the Mandurriao police station, Cordero, a resident of Barangay Amamaros, Pototan town but detailed in a building in Barangay Poblacion, Janiuay, pointed to Villareal as the brains behind the crime. He claimed he just went along out of fear.

Villareal denied this. He pointed back at Cordero as the mastermind and claimed he was only told to drive the car.

“We only planned to steal the car and extort money from the owners,” Villareal told Panay News on Tuesday while detained in the lockup cell of the police station in Tigbauan town.

After pushing the couple to the backseats of the sport utility vehicle, Tingson took the driver’s seat and drove toward northern Iloilo but he got cold feet when they reached the municipality of Zarraga and disembarked from the vehicle, Cordero said in a radio interview.

Villareal took over the car and drove toward Banate town. On board, Cordero said they touched the woman’s private organ.

Villareal did it first, Cordero said. “Indi tani ko galing ginapahog ako ni Sirius nga tiruhon.
Pero wala ko gingamit akon kinatawo. Ginhikap ko lang.”

When they reached Barangay Poblacion, Banate, the woman asked if she could buy water. Villareal permitted her and told Cordero to buy condoms.

That was when the woman ran and sought help from workers of a 24-hour convenience store. She then reported to the municipal police, which in turn sent alerts to nearby stations.

Flustered that their woman captive escaped, Villareal and Cordero drove away but reached a rough road in Barangay Puerto Princesa, Barotac Viejo and hit a mahogany tree, catching the attention of barangay tanods.

The suspects ran away, leaving Jocson in the vehicle.

Responding police officers led by Chief Inspector Charlie Sustento eventually caught Villareal around 8:30 p.m. They seized a 12-gauge shotgun from him.

Six hours later, they nabbed Cordero in a mountainous area of the village.

PLANNED

“Si Sirius nagplano nga mang-carnap
tapos ipatubos namon sa tag-iya,” Cordero insisted, recalling how he and Villareal went to a subdivision in this city on Monday morning in search of a private vehicle.

“Naghambal pa gid sia nga dapat babaye ang driver kay molestiyahan niya,” he said in a radio interview. “Ginapahog niya kami nga tiruhon kon indi kami magsunod sa iya.”

Failing to find a victim in the subdivision, they headed to the mall but not before having a drinking binge in the City Proper, said Cordero.

Cordero said he met Villareal five months ago through the realtor Jerry Locsin, who works in an office in the building he was guarding in Janiuay.

PREVIOUS CASES

Police said Villareal hid in Locsin’s house after he and friend Paul Aaron Campos were accused of raping a 19-year-old girl on May 5, 2015 in Oton town.

The victim “Hanna” told the authorities she and friend “Rose” were at Plazuela de Iloilo in Mandurriao when Villareal and Campos asked for directions to Arevalo district and requested to accompany them.

The women rode Villareal’s Isuzu Crosswind. When they reached Asilo de Molo, the suspects dropped Rose. Hanna told the police Villareal and Campos raped her when they reached Oton and left her there.

Villareal and Campos were also accused of sexually assaulting a 36-year-old woman in Barangay Atabayan, Tigbauan on March 29, 2015.

“Nene” said she was walking in the village around 8 p.m. when a gray Crosswind pulled over next to her. Villareal, the driver, asked her for directions to Molo and requested that she get in the vehicle and accompany him. She obliged.

Villareal then told Nene to take off her clothes and move to the back seat. When she refused, Villareal punched her, raped her four times and left her on the roadside, police said.

The Villareal family reportedly had a settlement with Nene. The suspect’s father, a ship captain, allegedly paid the victim P1 million.

‘CAN’T RAPE HER’

While admitting that they planned to steal the couple’s SUV on Monday, Villareal denied raping the woman.

“I had no plan to rape [her] because I have a pending case for rape,” he told Panay News.

Villareal, who attended a maritime college in Tigbauan, also pointed to Cordero as the one who raped the woman. He also denied taking illegal drugs.

“How can I abuse her when I was driving? Just ask the victim so [you would know] kon sin-o sa amon gasugid matuod,” he said.

Villareal admitted he worked and lived with the realtor Locsin after escaping municipal police officers from Oton out to serve him an arrest warrant for allegedly raping the 19-year-old “Hanna.”

Meanwhile, the SM City Iloilo management said they were working with the authorities looking into the incident at their parking area.

“We are currently cooperating with the local [police] with the ongoing investigation,” it said in a statement. “We continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of all our customers.”/PN
