Soldier hurt in encounter

ILOILO City – An encounter between the New People’s Army (NPA) and the 61st Infantry Battalion (IB) of the Philippine Army in Brgy. Lahug, Tapaz, Capiz wounded one of the soldiers.

Major Ray Tiongson, spokesperson of the 3rd Infantry Division (3ID), said the wounded soldier had yet to be identified, since he is still in the encounter site.

“The firefight is still ongoing, but we have already sent teams to the area to augment,” Tiongson said yesterday.

The encounter happened around 12:10 p.m. while the 61IB led by 2Lt. Gil Gamay was having community security operation.

They crossed path with members of the NPA Central Front Committee led by Ka Ted.

“Our men responded to the warning of the community about armed men in the area,” Tiongson said.

This encounter was the first time to happen in Brgy. Lahug, he added.

Brigadier Gen. Arnold Quiapo, commander of 601st Infantry Brigade, said troops had been sent to the area to rescue the wounded soldier./PN
