Task force seeks to boost flood mitigation efforts

ILOILO City – Mayor Jerry Treñas has issued Executive Order No. 046, series of 2025, creating the Iloilo City Drainage Task Force to address persistent flooding issues through improved coordination and strategic planning.

Citing the vulnerability of the city to flooding due to its geomorphology and location, Treñas emphasized the need to streamline efforts among various departments and national agencies. The task force will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the city’s drainage infrastructure, identify flood-prone areas, and develop targeted mitigation plans.

The task force is chaired by Treñas himself, with Mavi Gustilo of the Office of the Building Official as vice chairperson. Members include key personnel from the City Architect’s Office, General Services Office, City Engineer’s Office, and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) from both city and regional offices.

Among the initial focus areas for drainage improvement are La Paz-Huervana, Camalig, Jalandoni-Gen. Luna-Mabini Streets, and Dungon Creek.

The task force is also mandated to oversee compliance with environmental and engineering standards, facilitate inter-agency coordination, and submit regular reports to the Office of the City Mayor.

Funding for the task force’s operations will be sourced from existing city government resources, subject to accounting and auditing rules. The order, signed on June 2, 2025, takes effect immediately.

“This move ensures that our drainage system is functional and our communities are better protected from floods,” said Treñas./PN
