MANILA – Graduating players whose farewell tours were cut short by the cancellation of University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 82 due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) might be given extra eligibility.
UAAP executive director Rebo Saguisag said in an interview with “2OT” online talk show that the idea is currently on the table. The athletic association, however, is not expected to hastily come up with a decision during the enhanced community quarantine period (ECQ).
“We haven’t made any decision yet. There’s no need to rush. We actually have the luxury of time, especially now that we’re under ECQ. However, suffice to say that the issue is pending, and the fact that it’s pending means that we’re discussing it,” said Saguisag.
We can say that we’re open because it makes sense,” he added. “If they only played one or two games, or worse, had their events cancelled like baseball, then why would you count it as a playing year? So, I think that’s easily acceptable.”
According to the executive director, however, the possible main point of contention is the age requirement. UAAP disallows players aged over 25 to suit up for their respective universities.
“The bigger question that I think should be answered is what happens to the age requirement? That’s something I can’t answer as we speak. That’s a thorny issue or a more interesting question,” he said.
Saguisag revealed that the idea of granting an extra year of eligibility to players was already there before the pandemic hit the country. The UAAP board of directors was monitoring the Taal volcano situation back then.
“Even before COVID-19 pandemic, there was the Taal volcano situation. Around that time, we were already worried that it might affect the season. So, the idea has been floated,” Saguisag said./PN
