AIMED at awakening the interest of the present generation on comics, the University of Iloilo- PHINMA Education Network (UI-PHINMA) College of Information Technology Education (CITE), College IT Education Multimedia and Animation Studio (CITE MAS), and MAGE, Inc. conducted a seminar about comics on Sept. 8 at UI-PHINMA Audio Visual Room.
Participated in by high school and elementary students from La Paz National High School, Fort San Pedro National High School, Assumption Iloilo, and UI-PHINMA Basic Education, the seminar titled “Vicomology,” which bore the theme “Bridging Today’s Young Artists to the Media of Tomorrow,” tackled various topics about comics.
Discussed by UI-PHINMA CITE MAS adviser Dr. Arnold Fuentes, the topics included background of the comics industry, the growing trend of Visayan comics, basic comics style, and techniques in creating comics such as paneling and making scripts.
According to Fuentes, the seminar aimed to create a new breed of comic artists who will revive the industry in the region.
He added that the event was also in line with the preparation of the schools for the K-12 educational system which will include multimedia and animation courses for junior high school.
Fuentes noted that at present, the comics industry in Western Visayas is catching up and is continuously revived as comic artists use technology to reach more audiences.
With the success of the recently held seminar, he said they are now planning to hold a regional comics convention in November that will gather young artists from all over the region to learn more about comics./PN
