The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) officially announced the resumption of fishing for sardines, herrings and mackerels at the Community Fish Landing Center in Barangay Pawa, Panay, Capiz.

“Everybody will be happy again to harvest the bounty of the sea, especially of the three fish species at the Visayan Sea,” said BFAR regional director Remia A. Aparri.

Aparri thanked the members of a task force that helped ensure the three-month closed season, aimed at conserving particular fish species in one of the country’s major fishing grounds, was enforced.

The Visayan Sea boasts of 546 fish species.

Fisheries Administrative Order No. 167-3 directed the closed season from Nov. 15, 2016 to Feb. 15, 2017.

According to scientific studies, the period was the peak of the breeding and spawning of sardines, herrings and mackerels.
