MANILA – In a meeting in Malacañang on Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte and former president Fidel Ramos talked about climate change, peace process and ambassadorial appointments.
“We talked about the treaty on climate change. He had his points. I gave him mine and we agreed that I’ll sign it,” Duterte said, referring to the Paris accord to which the Philippines was a signatory.
The agreement, according to him, “is not on my table as yet.”
Ramos, one of the people who convinced Duterte to seek presidency in the last elections, previously criticized the President for his statement against the ratification of the global deal on climate change.
Duterte said they also discussed how to handle the issues on the peace process that involves Moro National Liberation Front leader Nur Misuari.
“He gave a few suggestions. He gave me a book to retrace the history of how Misuari came in from the fold to talk to the government,” the former mayor of Davao City shared.
Lastly, Duterte said Ramos helped him identify the “right people” for various ambassadorial posts in “crucial” countries.
Asked if the newly resigned emissary to China raised a controversial issue during their “pleasant” meeting, Duterte said: “He does not dwell on it.”
However, the President said he was given a list of “some points” for his perusal.
Ramos earlier described Duterte’s first 100 days in office as a “huge disappointment and let-down.”
He said the government is “losing badly” to its war against illegal drugs because of the rising number of drug-related deaths./PN
