ILOILO City – The city government turned over three new fire trucks to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) yesterday.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the three fire trucks would enable BFP to quickly respond to fire incidences.

One of the three fire trucks will be stationed at the BFP sub-fire station in Barangay Calumpang, Molo district.

Its areas of coverage are the Arevalo district barangays of Sto. Niño Sur, Sto. Niño Norte and Calaparan and the Molo villages of Calumpang, San Juan, Boulevard, and North Baluarte.

A sub-fire station is currently being constructed in Barangay Calumpang, said Mabilog.

The other new fire truck will be based in the coastal area of La Paz district.

“Sa tatlo nga bag-o donate, isa na da tanker. Amo na diri ang ibulos naton sa (BFP-Iloilo City station) nga fire tanker nga guba na,” said Superintendent Jerry Candido, city fire marshal.

The donation increased to 16 the number of BFP-Iloilo City’s fire trucks.

Candido said Calumpang was one of the most congested villages in the city and it had many fire cases.

A series of fires struck Molo district this year. On March 7, fire hit Barangay Zone 1B, Barangay San Juan. Thirty-two houses were gutted and one was killed.

On June 7, fire razed a vehicle in Zone 1, Barangay Calumpang. Based on the investigation conducted by the BFP, the fire originated from the dashboard of a Nissan Vannette with plate number FDL-863. There was electrical short circuit.

On Sept. 25, eight houses were hit by fire in Zone 5, Barangay Boulevard. Out of these eight, five were totally burned.

BFP said electrical short circuit sparked the blaze.

Although there were fire trucks at the Molo sub-fire station (plaza), Candido said firemen found it hard to quickly respond, especially in fire incidences in crowded Barangay Calumpang.

“Kinahanglanon nga may mas malapit nga fire truck,” said Candido./PN
