MANILA – Athletes from Western Visayas and Negros Island Region are among the 159-man Philippine delegation that will compete in the 2017 ASEAN School Games from July 13 to 21 in Singapore.

They include Ilongga Elvy Villagoniza and Pamu Marquillero and Negrense Samantha Limos in athletics. Ilonggo basketball star Ryan Calama-an is also part of the National University Bullpups team in the Games.

Also competing in the tournament are Negrense Gerald Sudayan, June Clyde Abellano, Ricky Guarino, Edhmic Dave Balderas, Paul John Embahador, and Kervy Jules Cayetano in sepak takraw.

Department of Education assistant secretary Tonisito Umali said he is confident the Philippines can surpass its best placing of fourth place in 2014 when the country wound up with 11 gold, 14 silver, and 22 bronze medals.

Ngayong taon we hope to land second or third,” Umali said at a Philippine Sportswriters Association forum. “When we do that, it will be a big achievement.”

“The creation of the K-12 program has also given us a deep pool of talent for the ASEAN School Games,” he added. “Ngayon nakakapantay na tayo sa edad ng manlalaro from other countries.”

Aside from sepak takraw and athletics, the Philippines will compete in seven other events — badminton, swimming, basketball, gymnastics, table tennis, tennis, and volleyball./PN
