THE Philippine Statistics Authority in Aklan reported that the province’s annual inflation rate increased by 1.3 percent at the start of the year.

It went up by 0.9 percent in December 2016. The increase is lower compared to year-ago’s 1.5 percent.

The annual uptick was primarily moved by eight of the eleven commodity groups namely Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (6.55 percent); Furnishings, HH Equipment, and House Maintenance (6.53 percent); Transport (3.26 percent), Recreation and Culture (1.86 percent), Restaurants and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (1.42 percent), Clothing and Footwear (1.04 percent), Food and Non-alcoholic beverages (0.82 percent), Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas (HWEG) and other Fuels (0.53 percent), and Health (0.32 percent).

The other commodity groups had slower annual increments.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices in Aklan went up by 0.1 percent in January with the following commodity groups exhibiting higher mark-ups: Transport (1.01 percent), Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (0.19 percent), and HWEG and Other Fuels (0.08 percent).

On the other hand, the price index of Restaurant and Miscellaneous Goods and Services dropped by 0.08 percent while the rest of the commodity groups have retained their previous month’s rate.

The increase in price index across heavily-weighted food items is attributed to higher price adjustments observed in meat (0.75 percent), fish (0.72 percent), vegetables (0.16 percent), bread and cereals (0.11 percent), and rice (0.11 percent).

According to Provincial Statistics Officer Antonet Catubuan, inflation rate is the annual rate of change or the year-on-year change in consumer price index (CPI).

CPI, meanwhile, is an indicator of the change in the average retail prices of a fixed basket of goods and services commonly purchased by the households relative to a base year./PN
