MANILA – Kevin Alas caught fire in the fourth period as NLEX Road Warriors prevailed over Blackwater Elite 93-90 in the PBA Philippine Cup yesterday at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

Road Warriors trailed 65-74 heading into the final quarter until Alas spearheaded a huge run with four consecutive 3-pointers for the team to snatch the advantage 88-82.

Elite made its final scoring barrage to come to as close as 86-88 but Alas and Kiefer Ravena made conversions for a 93-89 lead to make sure the victory was within NLEX’s reach with 10 seconds left.

Alas posted 25 points – 14 coming in the fourth quarter – while rookie Ravena added 23 for Road Warriors (6-4) to achieve its fourth straight win.

“We’re trying to get a spot where we make the quarterfinals and not face a team with a twice-to-beat advantage,” said Road Warriors head coach Yeng Guiao. “Iyon ang naging goal namin for this match.”

Michael Digregorio top-scored with 16 points while Raymar Jose and John Paul Erram had 14 each for Elite (4-6), which fell outside of the top eight with a game left in its schedule.

In the other game, Jason Ballesteros came up with clutch baskets in the endgame for Meralco Bolts (4-6) to beat Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings 84-82 and stay alive in the playoffs contention.

A point behind 81-82, Bolts surged 83-82 on a Ballesteros put-back from a miss by Chris Newsome. After a missed shot by Kings, Ballesteros scored from the free-throw line to raise the lead to 2.

Ballesteros posted 7 points and 17 rebounds for Bolts. Garvo Lanete topped the team’s scoring with 19 as Anjo Caram made 16./PN
