BACOLOD City – The Bacolod City Anti-Smoking Task Force will convene after Mayor Evelio Leonardia called for its revival.

The task force, chaired by Secretary to the Mayor Edward Joseph Cuansing and Councilor Caesar Distrito, will discuss approaches to strictly implement City Ordinance (CO) No. 641 in line with the national smoking ban signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on May 16.

CO No. 641 regulates smoking in public places and conveyances, and the advertisement, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco products.

The Bacolod Traffic Authority Office, the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) and the City Legal Office have “strictly” enforced the ordinance starting Saturday. Information drives were also conducted.

The Department of Education, City Health Office and civic organizations also campaigned against smoking.

Senior Superintendent Jack Wanky, BCPO director, said they have not apprehended any violators yet.

“The public is compliant. I think the information drives were effective. The penalties are quite big, too,” Wanky said./PN
