BACOLOD City – This capital city underscores the role of radio in its development as it is celebrates the World Radio Day.

“We would like to look back how radio, within the 80 years of evolution in the history of Bacolod City, has helped in distributing, communicating, educating, enlightening, exposing, and choosing information to all Bacolodnons and Negrenses,” said Serafin “Jopy” Plotria Jr., chairman of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas-Negros Occidental.

The celebration started on Feb. 19 and will end on Feb. 24.

Plotoria stressed that the radio has been the forefront of the city’s history – the inception of the MassKara Festival, the wake of the sugar crises and the sinking of the M/V Don Juan.

“Radio is in the process of evolution and in the process of convergence with the newest platform, which is the social media that challenges the traditional media,” added Plotoria. “It is not correct to assume that radio, like other traditional media, will eventually become extinct. It is just a phase or a process.”

Meanwhile, Danny Dangcalan, acting head of the City Public Information Office and overall event chairman, said the World Radio Day is part of the 80th anniversary of Bacolod’s cityhood.

The World Radio Day is celebrated worldwide every Feb. 13. But the onslaught of tropical storm “Basyang” in the province prompted organizers to move the week-long celebration later. (PIA/PN)
