All is not well yet

WHILE the 2017-2018 PBA Philippine Cup is set open as scheduled on Dec. 17, there is no resolution yet on the impasse involving embattled PBA commissioner Andres Narvasa.

During the preseason press conference on Wednesday at the Golden Ballroom of Okada Hotel, the 12 team governors, composing pro- and anti-Narvasa, were evasive.

The normally media-friendly Narvasa was evasive to interviews as well and answered only one question with regard to the league’s commitment of lending players to Gilas Pilipinas.

Outgoing PBA chairman Mikee Romero of GlobalPort Batang Pier, the only one who spoke on the issue, assured that the internal strife will not affect the opening of the league.

“Basketball is played inside the court. It should remain inside the court,” Romero said. “Any internal problems, we will be dealing with among us. So we assure that the league will go on as scheduled.”

Seven PBA team governors were asking for the ouster of Narvasa after he approved the lopsided trade between San Miguel Beermen and Kia Picanto, while five others wanted him to stay.

We hope the matter gets resolved soonest, whether Narvasa will stay or go, so the league can go on with its task at hand.

After making a mark with Hobe Macway Travel in the Marikina City Basketball League (MCBL), 3-point gunner Ron Jason Buenafe is on his way back to the PBA via NLEX Road Warriors.

Road Warriors head coach Yeng Guiao said he has recommended to the team management to offer a one-year deal to Buenafe to join the squad in the 2017-2018 Philippine Cup.

“We will give him a one-year deal for now,” said Guiao. “He is free to explore but I told him that his chances of cracking the roster is big since he is already familiar with my system.”

Buenafe impressed Guiao after trying out with the team for several weeks. He also had an impressive stint with Hobe Macway in MCBL, where he won a Most Valuable Player trophy.

Hobe Macway team owner Bobby Co said he is glad Buenafe was signed by Road Warriors. He believes the 6-foot-1 guard still has what it takes to play in the PBA.

“The team has become a breeding ground for future players who want to make it to the PBA, as well as for former professional players who want to make their way back to the PBA,” Co said.

“We’re happy Ronjay became part of our organization. We’re happy to see him making his way back to the PBA,” he added. “We know he’s capable of making it back to the pros. He just needs a break.”/PN
