MANILA – San Miguel Beermen guards Alex Cabagnot and Chris Ross emerged as surprise leaders in the race for the 2017 Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup Best Player of the Conference (BPC).

The latest tabulation the league released Monday showed Ross — who placed eighth in a previous tabulation — tied with Cabagnot. Both now have identical 34.125 statistical points, or SPs.

Cabagnot kept his hold of the top spot in the BPC race with 15.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.2 steals per game on average.

Ross, on the other hand, averaged 13.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 8.1 assists, and 2.9 steals per game.

Beermen head coach Leo Austria was not surprised that Cabagnot and Ross turned out to be early favorites to bag the citation. They led their team to the Finals in the Commissioner’s Cup after all.

“I think you can see that they are the ones leading our team on both ends of the floor,” said Austria. “They were very consistent in their job and I hope they can continue what they’re doing because I know what that award would mean kung sino man manalo.”

Finishing behind Cabagnot and Ross were teammate June Mar Fajardo, who had 33.067 SPs, GlobalPort Batang Pier’s Stanley Pringle with 32.5 SPs and TNT Katropa’s Jayson Castro with 32.467 SPs.

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings’ Japeth Aguilar (32.4), Meralco Bolts’ Baser Amer (30.7), Beermen’s Marcio Lassiter (30.2), Batang Pier’s Terrence Romeo (29.7), and Kings’ LA Tenorio (29.6) rounded out the top 10.

Meanwhile Star Hotshots’ reinforcement Ricardo Ratliffe was favored to win the Best Import of the Conference with his 61.6 SPs after averaging 32.22 points, 20.78 rebounds, 2.89 assists, and 2.33 blocks.

The Best Player of the Conference and the Best Import of the Conference awards were expected to be handed out before the start of Game 3 of the championship series between San Miguel and TNT on Sunday./PN
