Ceres Negros FC’s Carli de Murga (14) faces off with a Shan United player for possession during their AFC Champions League qualifiers match in Yangon, Myanmar on Tuesday, Jan, 16. CERES NEGROS FC / FACEBOOK

MANILA – Ceres Negros FC escaped Shan United of Myanmar 4-3 to advance in the AFC Champions League qualifiers.

Carli de Murga, Stephan Schrock, Mike Ott, and Bienvenido Marañon came up with crucial penalty conversions to lift Ceres Negros to the knockout second round next week.

“For us it’s a historic moment,” said Ceres Negros head coach Risto Vidakovic.

“It’s the first time we’ll play in the AFC Champions League,” he said. “To be honest we are not prepared since we have only three training sessions but we just did our best.”

After a scoreless regulation period Tuesday night at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, Ceres Negros drew first blood in the extension period as Schrock curled in a ball over the defense of Shan United in the 92nd minute.

But Shan United retaliated seven minutes later with Patrick Asare striking the ball from the edge of the box over the defense of Ceres Negros goalkeeper Toni Doblas to knot the score 1-1.

Ceres Negros had a chance to surge in the second half of the extra time but Schrock, Jose Elmer Porteria and Manny Ott misfired, forcing a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, de Murga, Schrock, Mike Ott, and Marañon had four successive conversions. Shan United’s Christopher Chizoba and William Nyakwe missed, in effect handing the win to the Negros Occidental-based club.

Now Ceres Negros will have to go through Australia’s Brisbane Roar and China’s Tiankin Quajin to qualify in the group stage./PN
