Coffee House Beanery: A cozy, homey hangout right at the heart of the city

“IT all stems from a cup of coffee,” says Chinky Young, part of the trio behind some of Iloilo’s most sought-after cups of artisanal coffee, brewed only at Coffee House Beanery.

Now celebrating its 12th year, Coffee House Beanery started as a hole-in-the-wall in Barangay Ortiz, the brainchild of Pien Santos and her passion project with sibling Eric and cousin Chinky.

Their old location remains open to customers in Ortiz to this day, but in 2008, the family team expanded to a new spot on Ledesma Street, Iloilo City Proper – re-opening as a revamped café at the same spot last year, offering a cozy and homey hangout for customers to relax and unwind while enjoying a cup or two of their distinct coffee.

“We really have a passion for coffee, especially my sister Pien, and it shows in what we serve to our clients,” explains Eric, who is also hands-on when it comes to the food they offer to pair with their robust cups of coffee. “We never scrimp on our raw ingredients.”

Led by Eric, the homegrown Coffee House Beanery has expanded into a full-service restaurant in the past few years – from just pastries and sandwiches to complement their drinks, to a menu that includes pasta, burgers, and even steaks, all of the best quality.

“We’re this corner coffee house that’s big on the finest ingredients and food that is prepared and cooked fresh only when you order it,” explains Chinky, who also shares that Pien envisioned Coffee House Beanery “sanctuary” for people to just take the time to breathe, to think, to just stop and have a moment.

Coffee House Beanery commitment to excellence is best showcased by their main champion: Their cups of premium coffee. Eric and Chinky explain that each customer can expect a serving brewed from freshly-ground beans, as they don’t allow “second brews” to maintain the strong signature taste of their coffee.

“We saw that Iloilo had few places where customers could just sit and relax, read or write, in comfort. And that’s exactly what we wanted Coffee House Beanery to offer,” shares Chinky. “Though we started really small, it’s our commitment to good coffee that has customers coming back again and again.”

Also unique about Coffee House is its character. Adorning the café’s walls are beautifully-written inspirational quotes – some even mounted on frames and written on glass.

“Even as a small coffee shop 12 years ago, [this] has given a distinct character to our place. We have always found inspiration from these,” relates Chinky.  “Sometimes, when you stop and take the time to think, it’s nice to have some inspirational thoughts to ponder on.  It’s amazing even how this has set a trend with the numerous coffee shops that have flourished all over the city.”

Coffee House Beanery is located on the first floor of the One Lorton Building, along Ledesma Street in Iloilo City.
