ILOILO City – Firecracker vendors in Iloilo recorded lower sales in December 2016 compared to the previous year.
The low sales can be attributed to the government’s massive campaign against the use of firecrackers during the New Year, the vendors said.
Darlina Humay, who has been in the firecracker industry for around 10 years, disclosed that less people bought firecrackers during the holiday season, adding that their stalls were not that “accessible.”
“Gamay lang gawa ang nagbakal palupok. Pigado gid ang subong nga tuig kay siyempre una ‘to nga plano ni Digong (Rodrigo Duterte) gani i-ban gid ang firecrackers,” Humay said.
“Indi na bi dayun parehas sang una nga sa kilid dalan lang kami. Indi na accessible ang amon baligyaan,” she added.
Another firecracker vendor from Arevalo, Iloilo City who refused to be identified said his sales this year were significantly lower than the previous years.
“Gamay gid katama ang kita. Grabe gid kagamay kumpara sang nangligad nga tuig,” the vendor said, adding that the government must also consider people who rely on the firecracker industry as their source of income.
